Office Day Out | Liverpool

This year our EOT office day out combined architecture and infrastructure in Liverpool.

We visited the Queensway Tunnel Ventilation Tower on the pier head, a fascinating building designed by architect Herbert J Rowse.

Inside, we had a guided tour of the tunnel infrastructure including a demonstration of some very big centrifugal fans that provide fresh air into the road tunnel. We discovered hidden areas that are usually concealed from the public, such as the old abandoned tramway under the main road deck, and inside an emergency refuge pod.

After that, we went to visit the AR Photography exhibition Wide-Angle View at RIBA Northwest, followed by a brilliant lunch and drinks at Duke Street Food & Drink Market. Then we embarked on an architectural tour of Liverpool’s central business district, Guided by the Modernist app, we tracked down the city’s finest Modernist examples.

Finally, we stopped at one of Liverpool’s hidden gem pubs, Ma Boyle’s, for some well deserved drinks in the sun. Dating back to 1870, this historic tucked-away alehouse is located down a quiet side street off Water Street, facing on to St Nicholas Church Garden. Great weather and a grand day out for all.
