Places to Learn

Development of a replacement, 108 place ALN/SEN Special School. This large, purpose-built facility will provide Powys with a safe and non-institutional environment for young people with varying types of learning difficulties to grow and flourish.

Adaptability is at the heart of the design. Space standards have been optimised to cater for students with a range of mobility and emotional [including ASD & SEMH] needs [Up to 100% PMLD] and throughout its life the building will be able to flex and bend to suit the ever-changing needs of its student body. The scheme provides 4,400m2 of education space over 2 storeys, featuring 17 classrooms to support its cohort of 2-19 year-olds. All classrooms are organised around a central sensory courtyard garden, which provides safe and secure outdoor activity space, improves passive supervision, way-finding, and precludes dead-end corridor situations which some students can find distressing.

The building is also targeted for BREEAM Excellent, and targeting net zero carbon inoperation. The project started on site in July 2022 and is due for completion for 2024.
