Office Day Out | Shrewsbury

Last week we all enjoyed an EOT office day out, visiting some important architectural gems!

We had a tour of the world’s first iron-framed building, Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings. Built in 1797 by a group of nonconformist industrialists with the help of Thomas Telford, it’s the forerunner of all steel-framed construction, enabling the Modern architectural world as we know it. Last year it picked up a RIBA National Award and AJ Award following a high-quality light-touch retrofit by AKT II engineers and Fielden Clegg Bradley for English Heritage.

We had a tasty lunch in the characterful Bird’s Nest café, a street food café sat amongst the stalls and shops of Shrewsbury’s Market Hall – a classic Mid-century Modern building from 1965, complete with clock tower, described by Pevsner as “a good example of modern architecture” it’s been voted “Britain’s Best Market” in recent years.

Finally we teamed up for escape room games at Shrewsbury Prison! The original building was constructed by Thomas Telford in 1793, its iconic interiors have been the backdrop to many film and TV productions including Jimmy McGovern’s BBC drama “Time” starring Sean Bean.
